Why Aren't My Gears Shifting Properly?
A bicycle drivetrain relies on several components working together with very small tolerances. A seemingly minor adjustment or worn component can have a noticeable effect on shifting.
Common Causes Include:
Cable Stretch or Wear
Mechanical gear cables can stretch, corrode or become contaminated over time, affecting derailleur movement and gear indexing.
Incorrect Gear Indexing or Bent Derailleur Hanger
Small changes in cable tension can cause the derailleur to sit slightly out of position relative to the cassette.
A minor knock or fall can bend the derailleur hanger enough to cause poor shifting across the cassette.
Dirt and Contamination
A heavily contaminated drivetrain can become noisy, inefficient and difficult to shift accurately.
Worn Chain or Cassette
Chains, cassettes and chainrings wear with use. Excessive drivetrain wear can cause poor shifting or skipping under load.
The important thing is diagnosing the cause before replacing parts. Many shifting problems can be corrected through adjustment, while others require worn or damaged components to be replaced.
