When to Use Pedal Washers:
  • Carbon fiber cranks: Always use washers to protect the soft carbon surface from friction and abrasion when tightening the pedal spindle.
  • Cranks with metal inserts: Many high-end alloy or specialized cranks use pressed-in threaded inserts; washers stop these inserts from loosening or pulling out.
  • Preventing clearance issues: Install a washer if the pedal body, seals, or crank boot rub against the crank arm during rotation.
  • Non-round pedal shoulders: Use them when the pedal axle has wrench flats or shoulders that do not seat cleanly against the crank face.
  • Minor stance adjustments: Add a single thin washer (usually 1–2 mm) to slightly widen your Q-factor (stance width) or correct minor body asymmetry. Always ensure at least 11 mm of thread engagement remains.
